How to Prepare a Salt Spreader for Winter

A pre-season inspection gives you time to identify worn parts, damaged wiring and seized components before freezing conditions arrive. The exact procedure varies by model, so use this checklist alongside the manufacturer’s manual.

1. Clean the Machine Thoroughly

Remove old salt, dirt and compacted material from the hopper, feed system, spinner and frame. Residue attracts moisture and accelerates corrosion. Make sure the machine is dry before inspecting it.

2. Inspect the Hopper and Frame

Check the hopper, lid or cover, top screen, frame, fasteners and mounting points. Look for cracks, loose hardware, damaged coatings and corrosion. Correct structural or mounting issues before loading the spreader.

3. Check the Feed and Spinner System

Inspect the auger, conveyor, agitator, spinner disc, bearings, shafts and gearbox where fitted. Components should move freely without unusual play, noise or binding. Replace badly worn parts before they fail during a treatment route.

4. Examine Electrical Components

On electric spreaders, inspect the controller, wiring harness, plugs, fuses, motors and earth connections. Look for damaged insulation, loose terminals, corrosion and heat damage. Confirm that cables are routed away from sharp edges and moving parts.

5. Check Vehicle or Towing Compatibility

For vehicle-mounted equipment, confirm payload, bed dimensions, tie-downs and electrical supply. For towable machines, inspect the coupling, safety arrangements, tyres, wheel bearings and lighting where fitted. Do not operate a setup that exceeds the vehicle manufacturer’s limits.

6. Test with Suitable Material

Run a controlled test using clean, dry material approved for the machine. Confirm that the controller, feed mechanism and spinner respond correctly. Check the spread pattern and adjust settings in accordance with the manual.

7. Prepare Essential Spares

Keeping critical service parts available can reduce downtime during cold weather. Depending on the model, useful items may include fuses, connectors, bearings, spinner components, motors, controllers, wiring or drive parts. 8. Plan Cleaning and Storage
